Feel , Known For –

The Hawthorne District is one of the most unique, and most popular southeast Portland neighborhoods. Ever heard Portlandia TV show?  Parts were obviously filmed here for stereotype entertainment.  Known for the lack of formal business look, catering to the eclectic.  Liberal residents thrive on being as much the opposite of a cliché downtown business person as possible.  Piercings and tattoos are welcome sights and quite common.  Outdoor loving modern day hippies, hipsters, educated, environmentalists, activists, friendly, whatever you want to call the locals, it’s a free spirited neighborhood.  Small unique stores, cafes and coffee shops… no big chain department stores.  Cool place to hang out, just don’t drive the BMW SUV… you’ll look like a tourist.

Bungalows, Victorians, Craftsman, and other classic older construction make up 90% of the Hawthorne area.  Vintage Portland real estate.  Some are in fantastic remodeled condition brought up to today’s standards while keeping with a early 1900’s look.  Plumbing and electrical can still be found in original condition in some homes and countless projects are around every corner.  A desirable area for many due to authenticity of the area and retaining such.  Sizes can start near 1000’, 2 bedroom and a single bath.  Multi-level living makes up overall square footage and I guarantee basements will be included, regardless of ceiling heights or mustiness.  Larger homes split square footage between basement, main and upper floors.  Some upper level rooms have questionable ceiling heights for those pushing 6’ tall.  If you’re looking for houses with character though, this neighborhood has it!

20 minutes to downtown Portland.  20 minutes to the airport (35 with traffic).  45 minutes to Hillsboro high-tech or Intel but let’s face it, you probably don’t live in Hawthorne and work at Intel.

Local Shopping –

Tons of.  Walk on Hawthorne Blvd and Belmont St.  Cesar Chavez Blvd. (39^th) for most of the area’s convenient shopping.

Main Grocery –

Safeway on Hawthorne Blvd, Zupan’s on Belmont, New Seasons on Hawthorne Blvd, and Fred Meyer are all under 1/2 mile away.  Walk to all of them.

School Ratings –

Well above average for most Elementary and High.  Glencoe 8, Richmond 10, Atkinson 5, Abernathy 9, Buckman 9, and Sunnyside Environmental elementary 7.    Mt. Tabor 9, Hosford 6 middle schools.    Cleveland high 9, Franklin high school10.

Demographics –

Empty nesters still occupy area homes but draw has really picked up over the last 10-15 years as a hip place to live for 20 and 30 somethings, generation Xers.  Families and single.  Influx of younger environmentally conscious crowd.  Quite liberal and socially diverse.

Sewallcrest City Park.  Laurelhurst City Park (big). Piccolo Park, and Richmond Natural Area are all within a 1 mile radius.

Bus routes on Hawthorne , 39^th, and … you’re practically expected to minimize the carbon footprint, use the bike.
