Portland’s Alberta Arts District is probably our most popular counterculture neighborhood and the heart of everything Portlandish, at least as far as steorotyping goes. If you’ve watched the 2010 TV show Portlandia it’ll be obvious that parts were filmed here. Or, maybe this is just where writers picked up their material. Check out “Last Thursday” for a complete opposite of the Pearl District’s swanky “First Thursday” street fair. Budding artists are plentiful and often congregate among Alberta street’s where abstract art is displayed. Funky galleries, local businesses and entrepreneurs only, friendly and often viewed as eccentric individuals roam freely. Great eats and experience overall. Definitely one of Portland’s popular locations just to hang out and watch the tourists. Those are easy to spot. They’ll be driving a BMW X5 instead of a green Subaru Outback. Situated a respectable distance from downtown Portland, homes are planted on level lots and virtually flat streets. Sidewalks are common with typically a few feet of green between this and the actual street. These little green spaces offer a perfect spot for gardening and many home owners use it as such. Lots of cars parked on the streets as lots tend to be narrow with minimal street frontage. The Alberta Arts neighborhood is part of the city’s original design and density is higher that about any outlaying area, at least as far as detached homes go. Lot sizes are small to modest, averaging 4000’, common in-city look. Originally developed around 1910, it is one of Portland’s popular older neighborhoods. Vintage homes, 1908 – 1920 architecture and style. Fairly average sized homes, a working class neighborhood back in the day but through urban renewal projects the neighborhood has become gentrified. Bungalows, Cape Cod, and a few craftsman make up the older homes. Almost all square footage is calculated by adding multiple levels. 2 floors above ground plus a basement. Not uncommon to have attic type rooms above, low ceiling heights and only 7’ at the peak. Basements can be included for extra living space but watch for dampness and low ceilings again. Garages are definitely not a given as many have a single car or none at all. Street parking is expected. Sizes run from 1000 to 3000’ on average and some are updated but most have their original luster. Wild color scheme welcome here.
